Elizabeth's 'Killer' 'Hunger Games' Costume
While most of the pre-premiere attention has been devoted to Katniss, Peeta and Gale, The Hunger Games' adults are just as complex, fascinating and exciting.
And now that the world got its first glimpse of Effie, Haymitch, President Snow and Ceasar Flickerman in Monday's trailer debut, the stars are speaking out about their characters. First up, Elizabeth Banks!
In the latest issue of People Magazine, the actress opens up about playing the bright -- in both senses of the word -- Tribute chaperone.
"Effie is a very complicated woman," Elizabeth says. "She's a spinner. She spins everything into something positive. These kids have been pulled from their loved ones to compete on television in this horrible event in which they will likely lose their lives. [Effie is] charged with making their last days before they're in the Games as positive as possible, so that they go into the Games with a great attitude. And, of course, that seems crazy."
Equally crazy are the costumes she's required to wear for the film -- although the pink hair, towering heels and architectural jackets definitely helped her find the character.
"I would be in the hair and makeup trailer and I was Elizabeth, and then the wig went on and very suddenly I was Effie," Elizabeth says. "Every day I would have that aha moment, like, 'We did it! We found Effie!'"
Which isn't to say the discovery process was without its setbacks: "The biggest challenge of playing Effie was the shoes," she adds. "All of my shoes in the movie are completely amazing but highly uncomfortable. I said to Gary, 'You better be shooting these shoes, because they're killing me.'"
