Julia Roberts and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton teamed up to bring clean cooking and heating supplies to families around the world.
The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves was launched at the Clinton Global Initiative forum in 2010 and this year they have named Roberts as their new Global Ambassador. Roberts originally learned about the Alliance's mission while interviewing Clinton on the Oprah Winfrey Network's special titled "Extraordinary Moms."
The smoke from stoves in third world countries can lead to a range of chronic illnesses including early childhood pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancer, bronchitis, cardiovascular disease, and low birth weight. It also leads to nearly 2 million deaths annually, with women and young children affected most.
The goal of the Alliance is to help 100 million homes across the world to adopt clean and efficient stoves and fuel by 2020.
