Howard Stern stormed the Today show set this morning to preview the May 14 premiere of America's Got Talent and tackle the critics who say he only joined as a judge to be mean for money.

"Who would evaluate me as a judge on America's Got Talent before they see the show," he wondered of the PTC, who have asked advertisers to pull their promos from the show. "I'm not here to ruin the show."

And Howard made it clear that while he won't be rude just to be rude, he made no bones about the fact he will be honest. Brutally if need be.

"I watch Idol and those three judges don't have a word of criticism and I think that's selfish," he said. "What America needs is an honest judge. You owe it to the contestants to offer criticism. No more of this 'everyone's wonderful' – everyone can't be wonderful. This is a talent competition."

America's Got Talent premieres May 14 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
