Dax Shepard really had to prove himself to fiancee Kristen Bell. The Parenthood star tells Playboy magazine that he led a life of "Jack Daniels and cocaine" before meeting the "charitable and philanthropic" Bell.

"Kristen's a good girl. She grew up very Christian, went straight to college, did great in school and started work immediately," he says of the Veronica Mars actress. "So when we met, our backgrounds were opposites."

Given their differences, Shepard, 37, admits that Bell, 32, was apprehensive about jumping into a relationship with him. "All the things I'd done were terrifying to her, and she had a hard time believing I would ever be able to stay married and monogamous and a father and all those things," he confessed. "For the first year and a half we were together that was what we battled over almost weekly."

Bell had good reason to be concerned. Shepard says of his past life, "I just loved to get f***ed-up—drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything. ... I was famous for going out on Thursday night to have a couple of beers, and that just led all the way to Saturday night."

The actor isn't exaggerating his partying ways, he has the scars to prove it. "My nose is completely sideways from a drunken altercation. I’m missing a knuckle because of a drunken altercation."

Shepard has since cleaned up his act, and in addition to starring in the beloved family show Parenthood on NBC, he also worked alongside Bell in the comedy Hit and Run, which hit theaters this past month.
