Modern Family actress Julie Bowen makes a living making people laugh, but she takes a serious moment in her new PSA to raise awareness about anaphylaxis, which she experienced first-hand with her young son.

"The mom role is a lot easier when you have a script to follow," the recently Emmy-crowned actress begins in the announcement. "I learned that first-hand when my son had a life-threatening allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis."

Anaphylaxis is a very serious type of allergic reaction that can progress rapidly and may cause death without the required medical treatment. It can come about when an individual is exposed to certain allergens, most commonly in food.

As a mother of three boys, Bowen stresses the importance of being informed and prepared in order to prevent a possible life-threatening anaphylactic reaction from occurring.
