Dr. Gupta's Drug Overdose Investigation
November 14, 2012
From Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson to Heath Ledger, the list of celebrity deaths related to prescription drugs is staggering. And it's not just celebrities. Every 19 minutes someone dies of a drug overdose -- most of those deaths are due to prescription drugs. Prescription drug abuse doubled between 2000 and 2007 and now affects an estimated 7 million Americans. CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta is investigating the epidemic in Deadly Dose, airing Sunday on CNN. Dr. Gupta tells The Insider, "80 percent of the pain killers used in the world are used in the United States. We take a lot of pills in this country and you see the consequences." Dr. Gupta's good friend, former President Bill Clinton, is profiled in the special. Mr. Clinton has a personal connection to this epidemic. Two of his close friends lost their children due to an accidental overdose. The tragedies motivated him to become a passionate advocate for education about this alarming trend.
