Has George Lucas Gone Too Far?
October 20, 2011
All six Star Wars films were just released on Blu-ray for the first time, but many fans of the series were disappointed to find that creator George Lucas had tinkered with his beloved movies yet again, from Ben Kenobi's "Krayt Dragon call" screech to blinking Ewoks, an additional Darth Vader "Nooooooo!" and a new, CGI Yoda.
Now, as promised, Lucas is re-releasing the Star Wars films theatrically in 3D, starting with Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace on February 10, 2012. If the first 3D outing is judged a box office success, the rest will follow. But many die-hard fans are not pleased with what is perceived as Lucas' latest effort to milk his cash cow.
The amusing documentary The People vs. George Lucas, available on DVD October 25, explores the conflicted, love-hate relationship fans have with Lucas. Has he betrayed his masterwork? Should he just have left the original trilogy alone? Who really owns Star Wars -- Lucas, or the fans?
