How Leo Brought Dorothy's Slippers Home
Back in December, ETonline told you that Dorothy's Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz would be going to the highest bidder as part of History's Icons of Hollywood Auction.
Dorothy's Ruby Slippers - For Sale!
Well, the auction has come and gone and the winning bidder has been revealed as .... Leonardo DiCaprio?
Yep, you read that right!
First Look: Leo in The Great Gatsby
Turns out the Titanic star caught wind of the sale and mobilized a group of "angel donors" who all pitched in so that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences could reclaim what many believe is rightfully theirs.
"Leo's passionate leadership has helped us bring home this legendary piece of movie history," AMPAS CEO Dawn Hudson said. "It's a wonderful gift to the Academy museum project, and a perfect representation of the work we do year-round to preserve and share our film heritage." Joining DiCaprio in the acquisition were Steven Spielberg, Terry Semel and other nameless contributors.
