Set in a small Texas town, Bernie follows Black's community leader/Sunday school teacher/assistant funeral director, who strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow with a sour attitude (MacLaine). Bernie struggles to meet her increasing demands, and after a fateful encounter, months go by without anyone seeing her. Can Bernie keep up the illusion that she's still alive?
