By now it's no secret that Katy Perry acknowledges her divorce with Russell Brand in her new documentary-concert film Part of Me, and according to Katy, the choice to include the that painful part of her life was not even a question.

"Well I didn't think I could actually avoid it, like it never happened, because it did happen," she tells The Insider's Brooke Anderson. "But, I think I was OK with putting it in delicately and integrously, to hopefully inspire people going through the same thing. Everybody thinks when they have a problem, that it's really special and unique, that no one could ever be really going through the same thing that they're going through. ... Nobody goes through life without getting a curveball thrown."

And did she reach out to Russell Brand about being in the film post-divorce?

"Everybody that was in the film knew that they were being filmed, because I had always had this idea in 2010, before I went on tour," she says. "Everybody was very happy to be documented, and it was an overall experience people were thrilled to be a part of," she carefully clarifies.

As for her latest music video for Wide Awake (which Katy wrote specifically for the film) raising a lot of eyebrows due to her punching out Prince Charming, Katy does admit that she's sending a message out there.

"It was about the modern fairy tale, and that's what this movie is about -- for me, my modern fairy tale has turned out to be that I don't need the Prince Charming to have a happy ending," she smiles.

Check out the video to hear how Katy stays grounded, and who she wants to "stay the f*** away."

Part of Me hits theaters July 5.
