6 Must-Have New Songs!
1. Crystal Fighters, Champion Sound
These guys are definitely one of the more interesting bands I've come across lately. Their music incorporates both electric and acoustic guitars, synths, drums, and traditional Basque instruments like the txalaparta (wooden xylophone-ish percussion instrument played by two people standing face-to-face), the danbolin (a rope-tuned snare drum), and the txistu (a Basque pipe whistle). Based out of London, Crystal Fighters formed in 2007. This song is a single off of their debut album, Star of Love, released last October.
2. Active Child, Diamond Heart
Pat Grossi, aka Active Child, is based out of Los Angeles. A former choir boy, Grossi has appropriated a number of styles into his sound. His debut album, You Are All I See, out this past August via Vagrant records, is focused "primarily on the joy and heartbreak of relationships, love lost and rediscovered, battles with monogamy, battles with identity", Pat says. He's on tour right now with mixtape alum M83, make sure to check them out if you can!
3. Small Black, Moon Killer
Ryan Heyner, Josh Kolenik, Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin formed Small Black in 2007. The band is based out of Brooklyn, but Heyner and Kolenik do their writing tucked away in hiding. Their debut EP, released in 2009, was written the previous winter in the attic of a Long Island home. Their debut full length album, New Chain, released last October, was written in a Delaware suburb. This song is off their upcoming mixtape, expected 11/11/11, titled Moon Killer.
4. Charli XCX, Nuclear Seasons
Is she not the spitting image of Marina from Marina & the Diamonds?? Although Charli XCX's sound is a little bit darker. The girl is only 19! This London-based electro-pop singer is definitely one to keep an eye on. Her debut full-length is due out next year.
5. Body Language, Seeds of Sight
Body Language is Angelica Bess, Ian Chang, Grant Wheeler and Matthew Young. Based out of Brooklyn, these guys started off by making weekly dance party remixes. They self-released their debut EP in 2010. This song is off their debut full-length album, Social Studies, released October 18th. It was difficult for me to choose one song because they are all so good - I seriously recommend checking out the entire album.
6. Grimes, Oblivion
Montreal native Claire Boucher sounds like a pop star from a distant planet. She's also a wicked artist. What is it about Montreal that breeds such interesting folk? Boucher has been a busy girl, releasing three albums in the past two years. She also toured recently with Lykki Li. This song is off her forthcoming album Visions, due January 31. Expect lots of boppy/creepy synths and Mariah Carey-pitched vocals.
