6 Must Hear New Songs
1. Keep Shelly In Athens, DIY
You don’t even know how hard it was to pick just one song. Welcome to my most favorite current obsession. Twenty-one-year-old Sarah P and her male musical counterpart released their debut EP, In Love With Dusk, in 2010 and quickly sold out. This song is off their upcoming EP, Our Own Dream, via Forest Family, coming to a store and/or computer near you this fall.
2. Silver Swans, He Doesn't Know Why
This cover is so freakin' cute, I can't stand it. If The Knife and Ladytron had a musical love child, this is what it would sound like. Silver Swans is producer/musician Jon Waters and vocalist Ann Yu. They began in San Francisco in 2007 when the song Realize The Ghost flourished into a full-length record. Two years later, Realize The Ghost was released on Tricycle Records. This song was just released on Bandcamp this past October.
3. Nurses, Fever Dreams
This video looks like it was so much fun to make! Aaron Chapman, John Bowers and James Mitchell, aka Nurses, are based out of Portland. Nurses started out as a quartet from Idaho. When they moved to Portland, they met Mitchell and the trio was formed. Their debut album, Apple's Acre, was released in August of 2009 (definitely check this album out if you like Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear). This song is off their sophomore album, Dracula, out this past September.
4. Gonjasufi, Eatfish
This guy has pretty much the coolest Wikipedia page I've ever seen. "Gonjasufi (born Smach Ecks, aka Sumach Valentine, ca. 1978) is a rapper, singer, disc jockey and yoga teacher from San Diego, California and currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ecks was born to a Mexican mother and an American-Ethiopian father. He has been releasing music since the early 90s among the San Diego Hip Hop Scene." Okay, so some of it isn't grammatically, perhaps even factually correct. But how fun does this guy sound?! His music is pretty amazing, too. This song is off his recently released (free!) EP, The Ninth Inning, through Hydroshare.tv.
5. Washed Out, Call It Off
Mixtape alum Washed Out, aka Ernest Greene, aka musical genius, intended to be a librarian. Can you imagine?? The USC graduate mastered in Library and Information Science, but when he couldn’t find a job after college, he moved back home to Perry, Georgia. It was in his old bedroom where he began producing songs. Shortly after, he released his first two EPs and soon won over the favor of a number of influential music bloggers. This song is a bonus track off his debut studio album, Within and Without, released this past July. Who knew the librarian job market was so cut throat?
6. Chrome Sparks (feat Stefaloo), Still Sleeping
Chrome Sparks, aka Jeremy Malvin, is a twenty-year-old percussion major at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He released his debut EP, My <3, this past July on Bandcamp. This song, featuring LA-based vocalist Steph Thompson, aka Steffaloo, is off Chrome Sparks' soon-to-be-released EP, Surface Glows.
