Czech supermodel and "Dancing with the Stars" contestant Petra Nemcova is herself a tsunami survivor and spoke out to The Insider about the devastating earthquake-triggered tsunami in Japan.
Petra was on a shoot in Thailand with her fiance Simon Atlee when the 2004 tsunami struck Asia. Atlee was killed and Nemcova suffered a broken pelvis in addition to severe internal injuries. She was airlifted out of the wreckage and went through months of intensive care while learning walk again.
"Waking up today was very hard. Your heart sinks seeing those images and reading all the information and looking at the videos," Petra tells The Insider. "When I look at those images and videos, you feel with the people and you are worrying what they are going through - how much they are suffering right now," she added.
Petra says the key to avoiding bloodshed in such diasters is preparation. "If those people would have a knowledge of how to recognize early warning signs of tsunami and what to do, they could perhaps escape faster, sooner. And having that knowledge would save their lives." She adds: "We can't stop natural disasters, but we can arm ourselves with knowledge and education."
After her own experiences, Petra founded the Happy Hearts Fund -- a non-profit organization with a mission to improve children's lives through educational and sustainable programs in natural disaster areas.

The mirror ball glistened in the eyes of eager young students as "Dancing with the Stars" pro Derek Hough visited The Lounge at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on Saturday.

This special dance class was conceived in conjunction with the Clark County School District School-Community Partnership Program and Fine Arts Program.
Derek will be taking the upcoming season of "DWTS" off to embark on an acting career. He explained the premise of his film 'Cobu 3D,' as "essentially a Romeo and Juliet story; east meets west. Kind of a fusion. It's exciting because it's going to be something that nobody's really seen me do before."
"Dancing with the Stars" returns to ABC on Monday, March 21. Kym Johnson, with partner Hines Ward, will seek to tackle the ballroom.

Ryan Phillippe has been rumored to be dating Amanda Seyfried and the actor made fun of some the gossip on the Hollywood red carpet of 'The Lincoln Lawyer' premiere on Thursday.
"I tried to get one of my friends to be my date and start some other rumors but no," said Phillippe who showed up dateless for the event.
In 'The Lincoln Lawyer,' criminal defense attorney Michael "Mick" Haller (Matthew McConaughey) gets his big break, landing a case defending a Beverly Hills playboy (Phillippe) accused of attempted murder. The case goes from Haller's dream job to unimaginable nightmare as the story unfolds.
"I just enjoyed playing a bad guy," said Phillippe. "It's a lot of fun."
McConaughey arrived on the red carpet with his family and friends in tow.
"The special part for me is I've got probably 50 people who kind of supported me through all the stuff I do," said McConaughey.
Although the two are at odds in the movie, McConaughey and Phillippe were able to connect off-screen on a personal level.
"I've been a father for over a decade now and he's a relatively new father so it was fun to kind of exchange thoughts and ideas about what that whole venture is like," Phillippe said.
'The Lincoln Lawyer' opens March 18.
Ralph Macchio displayed impressive athleticism as Pat Morita's protégé in 'The Karate Kid' but that was over 25 years ago, so how has the former martial arts prodigy faired through his "Dancing with the Stars" rehearsals so far?
"My body is holding up," said Macchio. "It's a crash course in using muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints that have been sleeping for 25, 30 years and they're like, 'Yo, what is up?'"
Macchio admitted that the process of turning himself into a dancer has been painful, saying, "I'm sore. I had a little strain in my inner thigh yesterday so I spoke to someone on how to sort of ice that on and off and prevent that from becoming a bigger problem."
The former child actor said that he's found encouragement from his family, who has been pushing to join the program.
"My wife just said, 'You must do this,'" said Macchio. The ballroom contender also has an 18-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son, whom he said "are really rallying behind it."
Macchio also has an encouraging dance partner, Karina Smirnoff, whom he seems to get along with.
"We laugh an awful lot," Macchio said.
Karina said that she didn't think they were ready for the competition yet but that they're in a "good place to start fine tuning everything and bringing everything together and hopefully by [March] 21 the package will be ready."
Be sure to tune in to the season premiere of "Dancing with the Stars" Monday, March 21 on ABC.
Kendra Wilkinson is perfecting her dance moves in anticipation of her "Dancing with the Stars" debut later this month, and she's telling Ellen DeGeneres how she's getting her hubby and baby boy involved.
Kendra, who is married to football star Hank Baskett and mom to Hank IV, 1, tells Ellen, "After learning how to dance, I come home and teach my husband all my moves and how to dance and my son is watching so he's picking up the moves. It's a family affair now. It's a family thing."
She also talks to Ellen about her ex, Hugh Hefner's engagement to Crystal Harris, saying, " I had a sit-down day with him without cameras, without media. I had a chance to get a really good talk in with him. He really seems happy. You have to be happy for someone that's happy like that. I'm happy for him. If that's what he wants to do, if that's where he wants to be in life, I'm there for him. I'm one of his best friends."
Watch our clip for more! Kendra's sitdown with Ellen will air on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on March 21, to coincide with the premiere of "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC that same day.
Entertainment Tonight was able to show you police knocking on Charlie Sheen's front door. After entering the estate through a side entrance, police shook hands with who appears to be the actor on his property.
A source tipped off Entertainment Tonight just before police arrived, allowing ET to capture this exclusive video of the very first moments between Sheen and LAPD officers.
Charlie Sheen's divorce and custody lawyer Mark Gross spoke outside of the actor's Mulholland Estates home late Thursday night.
"The LAPD executed a search warrant, which they had issued pursuant to the fact that there's a temporary restraining order which was issued on March 1, 2011, which among other things precludes Charlie from having guns in his possession," Gross said. "Somebody made some statement apparently to the LAPD, a reckless statement, about something with Charlie and guns. They properly did their job. They did an investigation and, as a result of that investigation, a warrant was issued."
He praised the authorities for "officially, appropriately, professionally, courteously, and thoroughly" executing the warrant. "The only thing that they took with them…was a few bullets and a 1800s antique gun," he announced. "They've taken them in their possession and Charlie will get them back in his possession at the appropriate time. But other than that, they didn't seize anything. Someone had asked if they found any drugs. The answer is absolutely not."
Gross described Sheen's demeanor as "calm" during the LAPD raid. He also acknowledged "yapping on the internet" surrounding a 5150 hold, which "is an involuntary psychiatric hold." Squashing the rumors, Gross added, "Anybody who's saying that, anybody who's implying that, couldn't be more wrong."
The attorney "doesn't expect" Thursday night's police search to result in a court appearance. "The only consequence there could be would be related to the [temporary restraining] order and we'll just deal with that in due course," he said.
