Rumors and speculation surrounding the cause for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's recent split can now be put to rest. In a statement delivered to The Los Angeles Times, the former Governor of California reveals that his estranged wife moved out of their Brentwood mansion following his admission that he fathered a child with a household staffer. 

Arnold's statement reads: "After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry."

With a plea for privacy from the media, he continues, "I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time. While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not."

The couple announced their separation earlier this month, however this is the first time either has spoken publicly about the details of their split. According to The LA Times, Shriver moved out of the family's Brentwood mansion earlier this year, after Schwarzenegger acknowledged having a child with a staff member who worked for the family for 20 years. Details surrounding the staff member have not been released, although The Times reports the woman in question retired in January.

The former first lady of California has yet to release a statement in regards to Arnold's recent admission.
