Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby news overshadowed the true purpose of the Video Music Awards, the presentation of the moonmen. That being said, other happy couples also shared tender moments during the show.

Britney Spears kicked off the night with a win for Best Pop Video for Till the World Ends. When her name was announced, she gave boyfriend Jason Trawick a wet one. The VMA makeout session continued between Hollywood’s young power couple of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, who hosted the VMA Pre-Show, when he won Best Male Video for U Smile.

Britney's lips were one hot commodity on Sunday night. Lady Gaga, staying in character as her alter-ego Jo Calderone for the duration of the show, even wanted in on the action when presenting the pop star with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. As her lips quivered, Britney abruptly turned away as Gaga inched closer. Britney laughed it off, saying, "I've done that already," in reference to her infamous lip-lock with Madonna.

Gaga also showed her sense of humor as the potty-mouthed, smoking, flat-shoe wearing Jo Calderone. Making fun of herself, she said, "She gets out of the bed, puts on the heels, she goes into the bathroom, I hear the water go on. She comes out of the bathroom dripping wet, she's still got the heels on."

Katy Perry gave Russell Brand a peck on her way to accept Best Collaboration for ET. Kanye West joined her on stage in ode to their duet. She reacted by saying, "Now this is the time you want to interrupt me Kanye." He famously burst in to Taylor Swift's acceptance speech two years ago to proclaim he felt Beyonce was more deserving of the award. Newlywed Katy went back for an explosive second kiss with her hubby when she was named winner of the ultimate prize of the evening, Video of the Year for Firework.

Lady Gaga, Adele, Kanye West featuring Jay-Z, Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Lil' Wayne also lit up the stage with energized performances. Foo Fighters, Nicki Minaj, and Tyler, the Creator won one award apiece. Lady Gaga got a moonman for each hand, walking away with two statues. Adele and Beyonce won in categories presented off-camera. The MTV Video Music Awards aired live from Los Angeles on Sunday night on MTV.
