Live-Blogging The 2011 Emmys!
September 18, 2011
Two of my favorite things in life are award shows and television -- so you can only imagine how much I adore The Emmy Awards! And with Jane Lynch at the helm, things are definitely going to get interesting! That's why I'm so excited to be live-blogging the 2011 Emmys for you on TheInsider.com!
First we snarked the red carpet (relive that here) and now it's time for the big show! Beginning in 3 .... 2.... 1!
7:55 pm: Modern Family wins Best Comedy Series. Even presenter Gwyneth Paltrow sounded unsurprised.
7:49 pm: And the winner for Outstanding Drama Series is .... Mad Men, for the fourth year in a row. For a show about a creative agency, this category has been anything but lately.
7:38 pm: Kate Winslet wins Best Actress, Mini-Series and basically jumps up and down with jubilation upon hearing her own name. In anyone else's hands this would be so distasteful but Kate can do no wrong.
7:35 pm: Guy Pearce may be the only man to ever make an "insertion" joke during The Emmys. Your move, Jon Hamm.
7:27 pm: In Memoriam segment requires no snark. R.I.P
7:20 pm: Even Greg Kinnear said "oh my god" when Barry Pepper won for The Kennedys. You people really need to start watching Luther.
7:15 pm: Paula Abdul should be applauded for that "I can't balance" line! She's Becoming Self-Aware Like SkyNet...
7:08 pm: "A lot of people are curious why I'm a lesbian. Ladies and gentlemen, the cast of Entourage." - Jane Lynch delivering the best intro ever
6:59 pm: Kyle Chandler wins Best Actor, Drama for Friday Night Lights -- and while it's one of the most deserving wins of the year, his awkward speech reminds me how much better Kyle is when speaking Coach Taylor's words.
6:57 pm: Nice to see Drew Barrymore hasn't forgotten how to walk in a line while holding hands with hot women.
6:54 pm: Julianna Margulies wins Best Actress, Drama for an amazing season of The Good Wife. But it should be taken away for that dress.
6:53 pm: Katie Holmes spent so much time picking out her dress, so forgot to do her hair.
6:52 pm: Jane Lynch as Donatella, the ultimate Jersey Don feels like a half-baked Christopher Guest skit. Put it back in the oven and call me in an hour.
6:45 pm: Peter Dinklage wins Best Supporting Actor, Drama. Reveals his dog sitter is named Kitty -- a random fact I adore.
6:44 pm: Kerry Washington got no love on the Emmys red carpet, so this is the first time I'm peeping her amazing gown.
6:40 pm: Love that Loretta Devine, but her gown really needed one more fitting before public viewing.
6:30 pm: Friday Night Lights creator Jason Katims wins Best Writing, Drama. This bodes VERY well for those of us hoping the show gets some love for its final season in the acting categories as well!
6:20 pm: Jon Stewart and The Daily Show win Best Variety Show for the ninth straight year.
6:13 pm: The Lonely Island need to perform on The Emmys every year. Seriously. Even if they're not nominated. Just make up a song and put Bolton in a Pirate costume. M'kay? Thanks!
6:10 pm: Winner for Best Reality Show is .... Amazing Race! A category it has dominated for the last decade.
5:56 pm: Second pre-taped bit is much, much better as The Office welcomes cast members from Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Parks and Recreation, Two and a Half Men and Castle. It was then ruined by a Kardashian.
5:47 pm: Yay for Melissa McCarthy! She wins and blurts out, "I'm from Plainfield, Ill -- I'm sorry, this is amazing." Yes it is.
5: 44 pm: Amy Poehler leads an amazing bit where all the Best Actress, Comedy Emmy nominees get up on stage as they await to hear who won. Which makes them all winners.
5: 42 pm: Jim Parsons wins Best Actor in a Comedy. Thrilled for him, but it's a crime that Steve Carell doesn't have at least one Emmy for his work on The Office.
5: 40 pm: Charlie Sheen arrives, camera cuts to Jon Cryer aggressively clapping. Charlie then addresses his former Two and A Half Men co-workers: "I want to take from the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together and i know you will continue to make great television."
5:30 pm: Modern Family goes 4 for 4 (Best Supp. Actor & Actress, Best Director, Best Writing) -- Best Comedy Series is a lock.
5:29: "Please welcome Zooey Deschanel and Will Arnett." I love that sentence.
5:26 pm: Ricky Gervais appears in a hilarious pre-taped bit that proves he should host every award show ever. Despite the jump cut edit being kinda ripped off from The Simpsons.
5:17 pm: And the winner for Best Supporting Actor, Comedy is .... Ty Burrell. His and hers Emmys in the Dunphey house! Add to that a sincere speech about his father and I'm typing through the tears.
5:12 pm: And the winner for Best Supporting Actress, Comedy is .... Julie Bowen! I'm a little more shocked than Julie Bowen is about this development.
5:10 pm: If Zachary Levi, Cobie Smulders and Joel McHale can't save this Emmytones thing, we're all in trouble
5:09 pm: "There's Betty White, she's the reason we start the show at 5pm." - Jane Lynch
5:01 pm: TV Wonderland opening song includes Jeremy Piven, Eric Dane, Big Bang Theory cast, Marcel from Top Chef, Randy Jackson, The Mythbusters guys, Ron Swanson, Andy Richter and Jane Lynch hitting on Peggy Olsen but no actual laughs.
5: 00 pm: Opening skit, Leonard Nemoy! So he can do this but not more Fringe?!?
