Joseph Morgan: The Original Bad Guy
September 22, 2011
For fans of The Vampire Diaries, the casting of Klaus was going to be integral to the success of that highly important storyline.
But I don't think anyone could have anticipated just how deeply actor Joseph Morgan would dig in to this deliciously devilish character. I mean, few actors can wear a smirk that masks a scowl, which is covering a Cheshire grin like Joseph.
I caught up with the actor at The CW's Premiere Party recently, where we got to talking about another one of his upcoming projects, the eye-popping big screen adventure, Immortals. "I really think it's going to be an amazing movie," Joseph told me. "One of [director] Tarsem's main strengths is visuals – he has a strong idea of how he wants everything to look and it's not always what you'd expect."
To prepare for the swords and sandals epic, Joseph joined much of the cast (Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Kellan Lutz) in intensive warrior training sessions -- an act he's very familiar with by now. "I did it for Alexander, Master & Commander and a remake of Ben-Hur -- so I’m used to my boot camps," he said. In fact, Joseph's spent so much time living in the past, that bringing a modern day character to life has presented unique challenges.
"Wearing jeans and a t-shirt is weird for me," he laughs. "I feel comfortable in britches and leather dublets. I keep telling [the Vampire Diaries writers] to put a horse into the flashbacks. I can ride very well ... although I’m not sure how vampires and animals mix." Then, without missing a beat, he jokes, "we could do vampire horses, maybe that’s the next step in Klaus' plan!'
As for Klaus' real plan, check out the video up top to see what Joseph is looking forward to this season and who might play his Original parents!
