GaGa Delivers 'You & I' Video
August 16, 2011
After a disappointing effort on June's Edge of Glory, Lady GaGa is back doing what she does best with the music video for You & I. It not only runs 6 minutes long, but also contains seriously killer couture, giant set pieces, great choreography and the central Haus of GaGa command: Love Yourself.
But while Born This Way meant that metaphorically, You & I brings that idea to life as GaGa gender bends to play both the man and woman in one of the video vignettes. Elsewhere, she adopts the persona of a desert wanderer (who clearly got stranded between runway shows), a genetically engineered mermaid and a bondage-loving dancer.
Aesthetically this is a wondrous return to form (in the vain of Bad Romance and Telephone) after the miscalculation that was Edge of Glory. Sadly, content-wise, this latest video is just as misguided as that ode to fire escapes. There are simply too many intersecting ideas here to truly warrant You & I a spot alongside her greatest visual works.
Still, it's essential that GaGa continue to take risks and break the mold, so while I'm disappointed in the final product, it's still better than 99 percent of what her contemporaries are putting out there.
