Erin Lucas' Must-Have Playlist
Erin Lucas, your music Insider, is back with another hot playlist to help you make it through the week! But what made her pick these particular songs? Check out her explanation to the left and then scroll down to listen to the jams that made the cut!
1. St Vincent, "Cruel"
Annie Clark's music sounds like a fantastically eerie dream. Which makes sense since she used to be in the Polyphonic Spree (those guys were WEIRD!). She was also a part of Sufjan Stevens' touring band. Clark is a freaking musical prodigy - the girl plays guitar, bass, piano, organ and sings like a dream. This song is off her third album, Strange Mercy, due September 13th. She's on tour now, go see her live!
2. The Drums, "Money"
This is literally the theme song of my love life. I swear I have an invisible tattoo that says, "Let's F**k" that only broke guys can see. Brooklyn boys Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham met at summer camp and formed Goat Explosion shortly after. The duo eventually split to pursue separate projects but eventually reconnected in 2006, recruiting drummer Connor Hanwick. This song is off their sophomore album, Portamento, released September 2nd. They're on tour now, check them out!
3. The Weeknd, "Lonely Star"
YES! Music other than Robyn Thicke to get down to. Variety is the spice of life y'all. Hailing from Toronto, Abel Tesfaye is the hauntingly hedonistic voice that is The Weeknd. This song is off his sophomore mixtape, Thursday, the follow-up to his debut mixtape, House of Balloons. Rumor has it The Weeknd will release a third mixtape, Echoes of Silence, this fall. Into iiiit.
4. CANT, "Answer"
CANT is the solo project of Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor. Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr. collaborated with Taylor on the project. Check out the debut album, Dreams Come True, out September 13th. I CAN'T wait for their North American tour this fall (ba dum ch!). Loving this song.
5. Gil Scott Heron & Jamie XX, "NY Is Killing Me"
Gil Scott Heron is a man who needs no introduction. But for the few of you who've been hiding under a rock, he has been described by music writers as "the godfather of rap" and "the black Bob Dylan". I am SO into this Jamie xx (of The xx) remix of Heron's 2010 album, I'm New Here. It was Heron's first original material in 16 years. This song is off the 13-track remix entitled We're New Here, produced entirely by Jamie xx, released on February 21, 2011.
6. Dum Dum Girls, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
I don't fancy myself a feminist, but when an all-girl indie pop band like the Dum Dum Girls can perform a done-to-death cover and still make it sound fresh and interesting, I'm floored. The Smiths wrote and recorded this song in 1986. Twenty-five years later, Dum Dum Girls recorded this version. California girl Kirstin Gundred, aka Dee Dee, began writing solo records as Dum Dum Girls in 2008. She is joined by her live band Jules, Bambi and Sandy, but Dee Dee writes and records solo with the help of friends like the Raveonettes' Sune Rose Wagner and producer Richard Gottehrer. This song is off the Dum Dum Girls' EP, He Gets Me High, released this past March.
