Backstage with One Republic
September 14, 2011
On Saturday, the guys from One Republic invited me to hang out with them at their show at the LA Fair. This is what I learned:
-It is important to warm up your hips before a concert.
-Funnel Cake is King.
-The boys are going to Vegas this week to record the first song of their new record.
-We can expect that record next summer.
-Ryan Tedder (aka. songwriting genius) is spending the year focused 100% on One Republic and not co-writing with anyone else.
Those are all really important things. More than anything I wish I would have had my camera rolling when we were standing around talking about music, and how much the guys in One Republic care about their fans. I stood in tears as Ryan talked about what inspires him. Apparently, one of their fans wrote in with a really sad story and explained that Good Life is now the theme song to the days that he has left to live. The band is flying that fan and his family out to spend the day with them backstage next week. Amazing.
I think that there are hundreds of good bands, with cute band members, who release OK songs and who play enjoyable concerts.
One Republic exists at a level far above any of them. They are a phenomenal band. With kind, gracious band members. Who release perfect songs. The band played one of the most thrilling, heart changing concerts I have ever seen. Ryan has a vocal range beyond anything I've ever heard recorded. The band is crisp and inventive.
I walked away from the One Republic show feeling lucky to be alive.
That is what music is all about.
I also posted an entire gallery of pictures from the concert over at my BUZZNET blog! Check them out!
