Six Must-Have New Songs
1. Twin Sister, Kimmi In A Ricefield
Singer Andrea Estella, keyboardist Dev Gupta, bassist Gabe D'Amico, guitarist/singer Eric Cardona and drummer Bryan Ujueta, aka Twin Sister, are from Long Island. Sounds like they were enjoying their Long Island Ice Teas when they came up with the name of this song. They formed in 2008 and are now living in Brooklyn. This song is off their debut LP, In Heaven, released last month.
2. Florence and the Machine, Shake It Out
British ginger Florence Welch knocked everyone's socks off in 2009 with her debut album Lungs. She's been nominated for a Grammy as Best New Artist, topped the US charts for twenty-eight consecutive weeks, and has been in the top forty in the UK for sixty-five consecutive weeks, just to name a few milestones. She is one of my absolute all-time favorites. This is the first single off her forthcoming LP Ceremonials, out October 31st in the UK.
3. Spank Rock feat. Big Freedia, Nasty
Spank Rock stole my heart back in 2008 at Lollapalooza with the performance of Bump. Baltimore/Philly rapper Naeem Juwan, aka Spank Rock, released his debut album in 2006 alongside original Spank Rock producer XXXchange. This past month, Juwan released his sophomore album, Everything is Boring and Everyone is a F***ing Liar, on his own label Bad Blood Records. This song is off his new album, produced mainly by German dance producer Boys Noize.
4. Rostam, Wood
You might already know Rostam Batmanglij from his New York-based band Vampire Weekend. The producer and multi-instrumentalist from Washington D.C. is also in the avant-pop duo Discovery. Like that hasn't kept him busy enough, he also contributed production to a song on a recent playlist alum Das Racist's latest LP Relax. Batmanglij just posted this song on his Tumblr.
5. Blood Orange, Champagne Coast
From one of my favorite labels, Domino Records, comes Devonte Hynes, aka Blood Orange (also known as Lightspeed Champion). Dev is a British composer, songwriter, producer and author who has written for Florence and the Machine, Basement Jaxx & The Chemical Brothers, just to name a few. This song is off his album, Coastal Grooves, released this past August.
6. Zola Jesus, Days Grow Older
Twenty-two year old Nika Roza Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus, has been a busy girl. The Russian American singer/songwriter has already released three EPs and two full-legnth albums since she began in 2006. Danilova was raised in Wisconsin on over 100 acres of forest and studied philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, recording songs in her apartment. This song is a bonus track off of her latest album, Conatus, released October 4th.
