Six Must-Have Songs!
Our music Insider, Erin Lucas, is back with six new songs you absolutely, positively need to have!
1. SBTRKT (feat. Sampha), Hold On
I'm not even going to pretend like I know how to pronounce this guy's name, but I will tell you this - IN.TO.IT. SBTRKT, aka Aaron Jerome, is a self-taught musician and producer from London. After years of honing his craft, in 2009 Jerome sent his tracks to a few noteworthy DJs and he soon became a radio hit. His remixes for MIA and Basement Jaxx, to name a few, were also equally successful. This is a song off his debut album, Young Turks, released this past June.
2. Gardens & Villa, Star Fire Power
Gardens & Villa is the project of five college friends from Santa Barbara, formed following the collapse of a post-punk band and a hitch-hiking journey up the west coast. Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden and Shane McKillop began playing in 2008 when they lived in a house on Villa Street with, you guessed it, a garden. Smarty pants! For two weeks in the summer of 2010, the band traveled to Oregon to now-labelmate Richard Swift's studio and recorded their debut album. After taking an oath to always play live (THANK YOU!) the band added Dusty Ineman to execute the live incarnation of the band. This song is off their debut album, on Yeasayer's label Secretly Canadian, released this past July.
3. Sun Airway, Waiting on You
Philadelphia boys Jon Barthmus and Patrick Marceill, formerly of the emo band the A-Sides, formed Sun Airways back in 2008. During their time in the A-Sides, they wrote a body of songs that eventually became Sun Airway's debut LP, Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier. The LP was released on Dead Oceans label last October.
4. Mina Tindle, To Carry Many Small Things
This girl is impossibly adorable. Mina Tindle, aka Pauline De Lassus, kind of reminds me of a Bjork meets Kate Nash meets Feist. The Parisian solo artist just released her self-titled debut EP last week. I predict she will be a 2012 favorite.
5. Sandro Perri, Love & Light
Torontonian Sandro Perri has made some pretty interesting music in the last 10 years. The guy is a musical genius. The musician/producer/one-time jazz student debuted under the moniker Polmo Polpo in 1999. In 2007, his debut full-length as Sandro Perri was released, entitled Tiny Mirrors. This is off his most recent album, Impossible Spaces, released October 18th.
6. Lana Del Rey, Lolyta
The lovely Lana Del Rey, aka Elizabeth Grant, is still my favorite obsession du jour. Her viral sensation, Video Games, was featured on my mixtape back on September 7th with a few thousand views. Today that video has over two million views. Told you she was going to blow up! She released an EP in 2009 under the name Lizzy Grant, but the project didn't catch on like she had hoped, so she changed her name and took down all of her work online to re-brand herself. Ah, America…the land of possibilities! Looks like she succeeded - her 7" EP, released October 11, has already sold out and her London show sold out in half an hour. Seems like she is here to stay this time, and that makes me very happy.
