You Must Know: 'Revenge' star Joshua Bowman
Betrayal. Murder. Blackmail. The laundry list of problems facing Emily Thorne in her quest for Revenge is an unenviable one. Except when it comes to choosing between bar back Jack and golden boy Daniel. That's one problem I don't think anyone would mind trying to solve. But with every additional episode, the boy's pros and cons get more and more muddled -- especially since Daniel has gone from cog in Emily's grand plan to reformed bad boy with a heart of gold and the wallet to match.
Last week, Emily's romantic life got even messier as Daniel's college roommate returned with plans of his own -- all of which require Emily to be out of the picture. I caught up with rising star Joshua Bowman to find out how Daniel deals with Emily's feelings for Jack, when he's going to man up and if he's capable of Victoria-sized scheming!
Insider.com: In just four episodes, Daniel has evolved quite a bit and devolved quite a bit. How do you see him?
Joshua Bowman: For me, he's a trapped bird in a cage that wants to get out. In a lot of the scenes with Daniel's parents, I have this image of me being held down, with a ball and chain strapped to my ankle. He can't get off the ground but is dying to. Daniel is looking at things for the first time – especially with Emily. Daniel is this kind of John-John meets Prince Harry, who has grown up in this world with politicians and very wealthy people who are not the most honest. But he's discovered this woman who has all the money but doesn't act like they do. Or so he thinks [laughs].
Insider: Do you think Daniel is falling in love with Emily?
Joshua: Oh, he's fallen head over heels in love with her. You'll see, starting tonight, that this relationship starts to blossom – little does he know he's part of a big plan. It's freeing and he's falling in love with this person and you're going to see him falling in love for the first time. It's quite an amazing thing. Plus, she lives next door – what could be better than that? [laughs]
Insider: The series premiere showed us Daniel & Emily's engagement party, so we obviously know their relationship gets to that point, but what we don't know is if that dead body was Daniel. Has it been equivocally stated either way for the cast?
Joshua: No, it hasn't. That body very well might not be Daniel. It's possible that it's someone else. I certainly hope it's someone else [laughs]. I'd love to keep working on the show, so I hope it's not Daniel.
Insider: Tonight's episode will deal with the fallout from Daniel's binge drinking after seeing Emily dining with Jack. What can you tease?
Joshua: That drinking was coming from an angry place. He felt let down by Emily but you'll see tonight that we go through another little shift. He makes a choice tonight that changes things for Emily as well. Daniel is going through a lot of emotions he's never experienced before. He's nothing like his parents, nothing like his family. He's different. He's very honest with himself, with her and he just wants to be his own person, instead of following the path his parents want him to go down.
Insider: Fans had very strong reactions to Tyler and his relationship with Daniel. Personally, I think Tyler is a little in love with Daniel. What are your thoughts?
Joshua: I wouldn't comment on the character choice Ashton [Holmes] has made. I see him as this Talented Mr. Ripley character who wants to take over my life. He wants what Daniel has and he comes from a very dark place. Whether it's sexual, I don't know, but all your questions will be answered.
Insider: Does Daniel figure out that Tyler was behind the whole Emily text debacle?
Joshua: He does get wise to Tyler's plan, but he's a very manipulative person. He turns things around on a pinhead. He's conniving and usually get what he wants. Or at least gets away with it. Emily is the one who figures Tyler out pretty quickly and they have an awesome confrontation.
Insider: Daniel is now being used by both Emily and Tyler -- does he, at any point, get clued in and stand up for himself?
Joshua: You'll see that he does grow a pair, but it might not be in the right way. If you stand up for the right person, they will just lead you around and around. I don't know that Daniel ever figures out he's being manipulated, but he doesn't take much s***. There's a few times you'll see over the next few episodes where he doesn't roll over. And I would like to say that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
