Christina Ricci: I'm A Halloween Costume!
ABC's Pan Am was flying high out of the gate -- great premiere numbers, crazy good work of mouth and visual flair that couldn't be matched. But, just like the jumbo jets at the center of the show, the ratings and buzz have leveled off in recent weeks, which is a shame because the storytelling, character development and intrigue are at an all-time high.
Particularly in this Sunday's episode, which functions as a massive flashback for Christina Ricci's character, Maggie. We find out exactly how she became a Pan Am stewardess and how many people she had to step on to get there. In anticipation of the episode, I chatted with star Christina Ricci about the shows promise, what fans can expect and how it feels to have inspired one of 2011's most popular Halloween costumes!
Insider.com: It takes all new shows a few weeks to find their footing -- do you feel like you guys are in a good groove now?
Christina Ricci: I do. I feel like each script seems to be getting better. I love that we're really getting to find out who these girls are and this Sunday's show really shows us where Maggie comes from, who Maggie was and how she became a stewardess. Her past is not at all what she says it is. She basically had to claw her way to the top in a lot of ways. The whole episode basically has her right on the edge of being discovered.
Insider: Actors who transition from film to television often talk about the joy and frustrations of finding out who their characters are, piecemeal. What's your take?
Christina: Oh, it's been really fun for me. Sometimes it's hard because we only get the scripts a couple days before we start shooting, but that surprise once a week is also fun. I'm constantly excited by where the writers take her and the way they use her in different ways. And who she becomes to the different characters on the show has developed really nicely as well.
Insider: From a non-acting perspective, how have you enjoyed learning about this era and these kinds of women?
Christina: That's been one of the most fascinating parts. Just thinking about everything they had to do everyday to get ready and what they had to think about when speaking to men or the way they walked and the way they talked. In Sunday's episode, you'll see how Maggie basically put the different pieces of her persona together.
Insider: ABC is really behind the show, yet it's the only new fall show on the network to not get the full 22-episode order yet -- how are you guys feeling on set about the future of Pan Am?
Christina: We all feel really good about it. I talk to tons of people who love the show and we're getting great support from the network and the studio. The new episodes we're filming are fantastic.
Insider: Plus, Pan Am Halloween costumes are all the rage -- I feel like that's the ultimate stamp of approval.
Christina: It's so funny, they have pre-packaged kits to be one of the four characters. There's a Maggie, a Colette, a Kate and a Laura. It's kind of amazing -- plus, I read that a Pan Am stewardess costume is the third most popular this Halloween. That makes me feel like everything’s gonna be good.
Pan Am airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
