Earlier this month, I moderated a Screen Actors Guild Q&A with Suits star Patrick Adams so when it was announced that he'd scored a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama, I felt doubly excited since he's one of the most down-to-earth, charming and talented actors I've ever spoken with.

Although Hollywood prognosticators weren't the only ones caught off-guard by the nomination. "I am still in a state of shock," Patrick told me this morning. "I can't quite believe it, or really articulate properly. This has already been such a crazy year, so nothing like this would have even popped into my mind."

Some backstory: prior to snagging his role as mental wunderkind Mike Ross on USA's charming legal series, Patrick had been fired from a job, which almost led him to quit the business. "It's sort of mind-bending to have gone from that sad place to this one within two years," Patrick says. "It goes to show you never know what's going to happen!"

Patrick also sees the nomination as something his entire cast can revel in. "You take something like this as a personal achievement but almost simultaneously you realize what a giant achievement it is for the show. For us to be part of the same conversation as Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter and Friday Night Lights is, for our cast, such an exciting thing."

As for the sartorial pressure that being on a show called Suits innately lends him, Patrick has a slightly shocking admission: "Believe it or not, a tux has never been on my body. It's going to be a brand new experience. I mean, with a title like Suits, I better pull out all the stops!"

The 2011 SAG Awards air January 29 at 8 p.m. on TNT.
