This Pop Culture Rewind doesn't venture too far into the past but takes you just far enough to just before Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin was conceived.
In this flashback we see Fey interviewed on the set of SNL during a guest appearance in 2008, a year in which she would later set the world into a roar of laughter with her hilarious, spot-on Sarah Palin impersonation.

We see Fey talking about how the show could possibly parody John McCain in light of his recent presidential instatement.
"An election year is always a great year for Saturday Night Live," Fey said.
"Great" was quite the understatement. A few months later, Fey created NBC's most-watched video viral video ever with 5.7 million views the following Wednesday after her first Palin impersonation.
