'Smash' Star Teases More Love Drama
"Don't do it! Don't do it! Don't .... they did it."
That was the chant echoing from my apartment last week as Smash came to a close with a kiss between Julia and Michael. And don't even get me started on Leo witnessing the liplock from his perch five stories up.
As the fight for Julia's heart continues tonight, I caught up with Will Chase to talk about his Broadway bad boy and why the fan reaction to this new development is so elating.
Insider.com: Big development last week with that kiss. What did you think about it?
Will Chase: Well I loved that everyone in Lets Be Bad was being bad. I think Michael's whole trip is he wanted to know if there was something there and after spending the whole episode with Julia saying "We can't do this, we can't do this," it changed in a split second.
Insider: And tonight? More of the same?
Will: It gets messy. We go to a nice place where you see that they still share some of those loving feelings – but then the other people come back into play. I think that's what makes it interesting.
Insider: But in a way, I'm kind of rooting for Michael. Is that weird?
Will: Not at all. The good thing about what the writers are doing is that people are kind of rooting for us as a couple even though they like Julia's husband. It's like when you see Sweeney Todd -- you root for this guy who chops up people and throws them into meat pies. Not that Michael is like Sweeney Todd, but you want to feel for these characters.
Insider: What are you looking forward to fans seeing?
Will: The writing is always great, but it gets especially elegant over the next few episodes. And episode 7 is my favorite. I sing a song, as Joe to Marilyn, but it's also Michael singing to Julia in this lovely little fantasy sequence. That's also the episode where we get to the workshop. Everything changes once that happens.
Smash airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
