Although fans had been bracing themselves for Matt Davis' Vampire Diaries character to die from the instant he signed on to a new CW pilot, I don't think any of us could have anticipated how incredible -- or long-lasting -- Alaric's demise would be.

"There couldn't have been a better way to make this character go out," Matt told me at this morning's CW Upfront in NYC. "I loved it so much on multiple levels. Not only how I said goodbye as a character but to the co-workers who became friends. It was nice for Alaric to break out and show a villainous side to him. I'm so happy with it."

And I think fans will be very happy with Matt's new show, Cult, premiering in January 2013 on The CW. The footage shown at today's presentation was absolutely terrifying while the concept behind the series is ingenious albeit a little bit confusing. Even for Matt.

"It's a hard show to describe," he laughed. "It's about a television show called Cult within our show and the crazy online fans who are obsessed with it and start to recreate some of the murders from the show itself. My brother goes missing to this online cult of rabid fans and I set out to find him. If that makes any sense."

Totally does. And I think Matt knows a thing or two about crazy online followings!
