'So You Think You Can Dance''s Top 20!
Cyrus 'Glitch' Spencer
The Insider: How did you get into dancing?
Glitch: It started when I was eight. I saw Michael Jackson, and I thought it was ridiculous. I was like 'what is going on'. I told my mom, she showed me my first wave, and I was like 'whoa'. That blew my mind. I stopped, and I got into sports. It was just something like when you're a kid where you think something's cool and move on. When I was 15 or 16, I went to visit my brother, and he showed me a movie called Breakin' …and I lost it. I was like 'I have to learn this. I have to learn this, this is ridiculous'. My brother showed me all the moves he knew. I was like 'this is really cool', so I just started tweaking it up and tweaking it. He pretty much taught me it, watching the movie, and seeing him. I guess I'm a visual learner. Everything just started connecting. All the moves and stuff and then it just became a feeling.
The Insider: What's with the nickname Glitch?
Glitch: Everyone calls me Glitch. … I had a small fan base before this because I danced to a genre of music called dub-step. …You know, I'm a street dancer. This is the first time [in years] …that people have called me Cyrus. My mom is the only person that calls me Cyrus.
The Insider: To those unfamiliar with your style of dance, what is animation and robotics?
Glitch: It's animation and robotics. Under the umbrella term, it's like popping, but it's so detailed. Popping is so kind of basic to me. So animation and robotics takes it and it creates stories and it creates stories that popping doesn't. You have your tricks, you have your illusions. My biggest illusion is my movement. Just appear to look fake, that's the animation.
The Insider: What do you think is going to be the hardest part for you?
Glitch: Everything has been the hardest part for me. Everything. I've never taken choreography.
The Insider: But clearly, you're amazing at the robotics, so have you ever had any training? Glitch: No, no training. Actually, I took one hip-hop class once, and yeah… that didn't work out [laughs]. Here, I'm put under the hip-hop category, but I'm so not hip hop.
The Insider: What's been the best part of being in the competition?
Glitch: The best part of the competition is the growth, just being able to learn so much from all these dancers and so much from the choreographers, being able to support each other, and stuff like that. That's just all good to me. I love all of that. I like being around a lot of people, but people around people with so much positive energy is the best.
The Insider: What do you think is going to be the most challenging part?
Glitch: I think the most challenging thing is overcoming mental barriers. As people we often block ourselves off from things that we're able to do. That's going to be the hardest thing for any of us. I think that if we can all just say 'we can do it' and really dedicate ourselves to trying and doing it, I think we'll all be successful.
The Insider: Do you have a have a favorite dance movie?
Glitch: Yes, Breakin'.
The Insider: Do you have a song that comes on in the club where you just have to dance?
Glitch: For one, mostly anything dub step, and for two, mostly anything hip hop, which is weird because I'm not hip hop.
