Project Runway's Raul: I'm Sick of the Hate
August 23, 2012
TheInsider.com caught up with Project Runway Raul Osorio after getting cut for a second time from Lifetime's hit show.
TheInsider.com: What does it feel like, leaving a second time?
Raul Osorio: I guess it was aggravating but at the same time it was [a relief] to just not have to play that game and having the drama around me all the time. The drama was getting annoying and how people reacting was weird. I'm glad that I'm out.
TheInsider: Well then, do you regret coming back?
Raul: I'm glad that I went back. I am glad I came back a second time? I don't think it was fair that I got to go home but at the same time I'm okay with it. I don't want people to talk about me any more. I'm sick of going online and seeing people just being extremely rude but at the same time there are also all these people who just love my work. There is just so much hate that comes from exposing yourself on television like that.
TheInsider: I know past contestants on Project Runway have talked about all the hatred on the Internet. Is that what you have found?
Raul: It's horrible. I just don't understand how someone can just sit and hate on people that way. But ya know it's TV. … Obviously those people need to do something with their lives instead of posting all that stuff.
TheInsider: Who do you think should have gone home?
Raul: I don't know. It's hard to think to say that at this point. I think our collection was pretty strong so I think no one from our team should have gone home. Maybe Nathan [Paul], only because I don't think no one even knows who he is at this point. I don't think his designs are even standing up. So maybe Nathan. It's nothing personal but there is nothing that you can think that he has done that you will remember. …
TheInsider: There were a lot of issues with team work on your challenge. Do you wish you would have worked together with your team better?
Raul: I wish that I had been more sneaky and pretended to like everybody. I think that's what works in this game. I was very honest and very straightforward and I didn't really play the game like a lot of people did. They become best friends with people in a day and this is not the way that I am. I wasn't part of the clique, so it was easy to push me in front of the bus and I'm not even sorry about it. I'm glad that it was my time and I don't have to deal with any of them. I did make some friends and some of them I don't care about.
TheInsider: After you were told you were off the show, you came back and told Elena Slivnyak and Ven Budhu you hated them. Do you regret that outburst?
Raul: I actually called [Elena] a few days ago because I know this episode was coming and I just needed to apologize because I don't think no one should be treated that way. I was just aggravated. It was a lot of emotions. I got kicked out. Remember that we film basically every day so everything happened to me in about a week. I got kicked out once and then I came back for the challenge, I was in the bottom … then I got kicked out, everyone is treating me badly. I was very upset. The fact that [Elena] was the one who attacked me, it was very easy for me to go crazy for her. So I apologized to her for everything I did. And she did the same. She apologized to me. I do not regret the way that I feel about Ven. He knows that I don't like him. They haven't shown the reasons. There were a lot of things that were edited. I stand by that. I don't like Ven and I want nothing to do with him.
TheInsider: Was there something that happened with Elena or Ven that viewers didn't get to see?
Raul: Elena and I never had a problem 'till then. … Whatever happened with me and Elena, it was just drama. It was being upset. … I think with Ven it was about personalities. I remember being in the apartment before and I snapped at him and he snapped back. It just had to do with who we are. I just don't think we could be in the same room. He plays to be very nice and quiet, but you can see that he is a backstabber. He goes to the interview room and he opens his mouth there. But when he is in the work room he is just quiet, pretending to be a very nice person but I'm very straightforward and I will say it and not be sneaky about it.
TheInsider: Do you have any regrets about your time on Project Runway?
Raul: No. I love the fact that I did it. I love that I made some friendships during the show. My only regret is going crazy on Elena at that one point. But besides that I am okay with it, I loved every single minute of it. Would I do it again? Probably, yes.
TheInsider: What are your plans going forward?
Raul: I am planning to on concentrate on menswear. … I don't think that I'll l be playing around with womenswear any more; it's just not my thing.
