Former sheriff Rick Grimes aims for the kill – or the re-kill – in the new promo poster for the anxiously awaited third season of The Walking Dead.

AMC's horror thriller with plenty of brains – and flesh-eating zombies to munch on 'em – returns to TV for its third season on October 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC with 16 new episodes airing in two parts: the first eight hours kicking off on the 14th, then taking a break and returning February 2013 with the final eight episodes.

Last season, Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), his family, and his rag-tag group of zombie apocalypse survivors began to fragment as they searched for a missing child and sought safe refuge from the increasingly bleak realization that life would never be anywhere near normal again. Now, can they find a secure home without getting killed – or without killing each other first?
