'Neighbors' Preview: Invading Alien Surburbia
September 18, 2012
TheInsider.com goes behind the scenes of one of the most creative new TV shows to debut this fall -- ABC's comedy The Neighbors. The show follows a family of five who escapes the city and moves to a Stepford-style gated community in New Jersey, only to find the neighborhood inhabited by aliens!
We sat down with stars Jami Gertz and Lenny Venito -- parents of the Weaver family -- about how their characters interact with the quirky suburban extraterrestrials.

Jami told us she thinks the Weavers actually learn more about themselves by trying to teach the aliens everything they know about how to live a "normal" life. "In the end, we're constantly apologizing because we didn't mean to hurt people's feelings," she said. "Whether someone comes from another country or another planet, you have to be patient and you have to have understanding, and you have to be giving. And I think that's at the core of what The Neighbors is about, is getting along."
Lenny talked about how sensitive the cosmic characters can be when they feel left out. "Their feelings get hurt when you don't include them in certain situations or when you say something derogatory that hurts their feelings," he said. "In one of the episodes, (an alien's) emotions are hooked up with all of the whole community so that every time he feels sad, the whole community feels sad with him."
