'BB14' Stars Break Down The Finale
Big Brother reunited the fifteen houseguests who were not expelled (sorry Willie!) last night for the season 14 finale, which saw Dan and Ian face-off in the final two!
As we now know, Ian emerged victorious -- but there has been some debate amongst fans if his gameplay truly deserved to best Dan's. I caught up with Dan, Ian, Danielle, Britney and Shane to talk about the jury's verdict, who truly deserved to win and if Danielle truly has a shot with Shane now that they're outside the house!
TheInsider.com: Congratulations on winning! How are you feeling right now?
Ian Terry: It's unreal. It's surreal. So it seeing different faces. This was a great experience, and now I'm looking forward to watching [the season] and finding out what actually happened, which will probably drive me crazy.
Insider.com: Has anyone given you hints as to what happened in the house since you've been out?
Ian: I got a little bit of information from my parents just now and they said that had I not won that Shark Veto, I would have been gone. And had I not fished the gold ball out, I would have probably been cut then too. So it feels pretty dang good to have just outsharked [Dan] and made it to the end.
Insider.com: You seemed to win competitions every time your life was on the line. Did you feel vulnerable in the house?
Ian: Early on I was definitely throwing a lot of competitions. Pre-reset, the only thing I didn't throw was memory chip. After that, I played hard and made sure I was going to get to the end by winning some comps. From the jury to the final four, there wasn't a week I didn’t win something.
Insider.com: Your feelings towards Dan clearly soured during the live finale. How are you feeling towards him right now?
Ian: I'm a little disgusted with Dan, as you can imagine. Finding out he would have brought Danielle ... I just didn't think he'd soil the Renegade name like that. Obviously all is fair in Big Brother, but it kind of doesn't matter because I won!
Insider.com:: You named your alliance The Quack Pack -- where did that come from?
Ian: Ducks are one of my favorite animals because people have likened my voice to a duck. Someone once told me it sounded like a duck was trying to escape from the back of my throat. Ducks are my favorite animal, so I went with it.
TheInsider.com: You pulled off several major blindsides and repeatedly got people to do your bidding. Are you surprised it worked every single time?
Dan Gheesling: A little bit. I thought I would get some mileage out of the funeral, but I didn't think it would go that far. I thought I would squeak out of that eviction, but it ended up completely changing the game. I wasn't capable of playing the same game this year because I knew everyone had my number. In life I'm not a ruthless guy, but it became more apparent that the only way I was getting through this game was to get you to like me, do something for me and then slide the knife in. I had no choice but to be ruthless.
Insider.com: Settle a bet: did you throw the final HOH competition?
Dan: Yea, I did. Had I had all this great information, I would have won HOH, taken Danielle and maybe gotten some more votes.
Insider.com: Is it that you didn't want to choose between Danielle and Ian?
Dan: Not really. I had a speech ready if I was going to get rid of Danielle. I was going to say, "This is like the end of a horror movie, where the killer is standing in front of you, takes off his mask, and it's your best friend. Danielle, I have to evict you.” I wanted to use that so badly, but I never got to.
Insider.com: The vote was 6 to 1 -- were you surprised?
Dan: A little bit. I thought I might have had Jen's vote. She didn't like Ian, but I have no regrets. If I’m going to lose this game, I'm happy to lose to Ian because he’s super deserving. It's not like I lost to a floater.
Insider.com: The jury just seemed super bitter. Did you feel that?
Dan: I knew heading into the jury it was an uphill battle. I had to get Danielle and Jen's vote to have a chance. It's disappointing they were so bitter because had I made it to jury, I would have voted for the best player. Granted, Ian did win a lot, but he didn't make any big moves and he took credit for a lot that he didn't do. I'm just glad I didn't get blanked out, seven nothing.
TheInsider.com: You looked like you were steaming on the jury during the live show, what was going through your mind?
Danielle Murphree: I was like, "What is everybody talking about?" I don't know how I've been perceived or portrayed because I don't know what Janelle was talking about when she said "All my lies." I'm beyond confused. I'm just glad I'm out of the house and seeing new people. It's completely over-whelming. But I love it.
Insider.com: Everyone wants to know why, after everything, you still voted for Dan.
Danielle: Because I'd given him my word this entire time. No matter what he's done to other people, I was still in the final three and he didn't cut me. I told him if he didn't eliminate me, he'd get my vote.
Insider.com: Were you surprised everyone else voted for Ian?
Danielle: Yes and no. I knew Dan was hated and I knew Ian was liked. I'm also sure there was a lot going around in the jury house that Dan couldn't defend himself against and it looks like that's exactly what happened.
Insider.com: Are you worried that watching the season is going to change your opinion of Dan?
Danielle: A little bit. Dan drives me crazy, he knows it, so I don't know what I'm going to see. I felt like he was being honest with me and every crazy stunt he did only furthered my game, so as far as I knew, he was being honest with me.
Insider.com: We watched you and Shane flirt all season long -- what was it like seeing him again and now that you're out of the house, what does the future hold?
Danielle: Oh my gosh, I got the butterflies again. There is a real romance there, I would love to stay what we are. There's no "show" in our romance.
TheInsider.com: Were you surprised Ian won in a 6 to 1 vote?
Shane Meaney: I wasn't surprised at all. The way Dan played his game, he did me wrong, he did a lot of people wrong and he had to pay for it. I think he knew he was playing for second place once he made Top 4. It's a shame because Ian won tonight and I was supposed to send him out Thursday, so that could have been me [winning]. It's hitting me hard right now.
Insider.com: Did you vote for Ian because he wasn't Dan or because he played the better game?
Shane: Ian definitely played a better game. He was true to his alliance before the reset, then he switched and made the best decision possible. He nominated who we wanted, he won when he needed to and definitely deserves it.
Insider.com: How do you feel after hearing from Danielle tonight that she had nothing to do with your eviction?
Shane: It was very reassuring. I definitely thought she had a hand in it and was playing me, but it still hurts. I had no idea that blindside was coming. I had no idea what Julie asked me. I just remember sweating pretty good. I did everything I could not to punch [Dan] in the face. I didn't want to pull a Willie. But at the same time, for him to give me his word on his wedding ring, it hurts down in the heart.
Insider.com: What does the future hold for you and Danielle?
Shane: There's definitely true feelings. We didn't want to be intimate around other houseguests because it would have put a bigger target on our backs. But as soon as we got some alone time, we could kiss and cuddle. That date let us be ourselves, but in the house, it was difficult. I have feelings for her, but she lives in Alabama and I'm in Vermont. We'll talk on the phone for sure.
Insider.com: Big Brother: good or bad experience overall?
Shane: Good experience, for sure, but it sucks going home without the money. I hope I still have my job because that's not guaranteed either. I don't think I've fully processed that I could have won if Dan had not backstabbed me, so it kind of sucks right now.
TheInsider.com: Were you surprised Ian won by so much?
Britney Haynes: I was not surprised. The thing about the jury is it always flips on somebody – this jury was never going to vote for Dan, whether he was up against Danielle or up against Ian. This was the most bitter jury in the history of juries. I am not kidding you, this jury hated Dan so bad. They could have Dan up against a bottle of ketchup and the bottle of ketchup would have won this game. The hatred of Dan was on a whole new level I've never seen. Bitter is an understatement.
Insider.com: So why did you vote for Ian?
Britney: I voted for Ian because I think he played a very good game. We were close in the house and obviously working together. He's a mega fan of the show, has an amazing attitude and was happy to be here every day. Every day in this house has been like a dream for him and winning BB is just making his whole life right now. Not for nothing, Dan played a great game, but he's won this game before. He's got half a mill in the bank and this was Ian's turn. Dan played a phenomenal game, but Ian played a winning game as well.
Insider.com: How did playing this season compare to your first time in the house?
Britney: This time was so much harder. I felt like I was playing so hard, non-stop, all day long, it was difficult. It was so exhausting it kind of made me wonder what I actually did on my season [laughs]. Did I ever make a deal in season 12?!? It was like I'd never played the game before.
Insider.com: Your goodbye to Boogie was a highlight of the season. What went into that bold adieu?
Britney: I think it's so funny ya'll are bringing that up to me because I don't even remember what I said. I didn't plan this extravagant thing, I just rolled in and did a goodbye message like it was no big deal. But it felt good – I knew he was doing those freakin phonecall DR's and I didn't like it, so I decided to do my own.
Insider.com: Finally, Quack Pack -- worst alliance name in reality TV history?
Britney: Quite possibly. It's grown on me because I've heard it so many times. It's like when someone gives their kid a terrible name. At first you're disgusted by it, but eventually you just know that kid as that name after saying it for so long. I've accepted it as The Quack Pack, but is it a bad name? Yea, it's pretty terrible.
