5 Questions With 'Glee' Newbie Jacob Artist
Being the "new" anything is tough -- just ask New Coke, Saved By The Bell: The New Class or New Directions. But things seem to be going very well for both New Directions' latest addition, Jake Puckerman, and the actor who plays him, Jacob Artist.
Three weeks in to the show's fourth season, and Jake has emerged as McKinley's newest heartbreaker while Jacob has emerged as one of the most stirring voices Glee has ever featured. I caught up with the 19-year-old to find out what life is like on Glee, what's next for his character and whose song he'd love to tackle next!
TheInsider.com: You filmed the first few episodes in a bubble without them having aired yet. But now that they are, what's life been like for you?
Jacob Artist: It's been such a surreal experience. We were so focused on shooting and it felt like we were in the eye of a hurricane a little bit. Then, all of a sudden, it started airing and it feels so real. The fan support has been equally overwhelming. They're so supportive about the season and my character. This experience is beyond anything I thought it could be. It's completely unbelievable.

Insider.com: What do you like about Jake?
Jacob: I was really drawn to the fact that he's so layered. As the season progresses, we pull down all these walls Jake has put up. There are lots of secrets to him that I think the fans will enjoy. He's really going to grow from all these relationships he’s making at McKinley, and that's been great to see. Of course there are similarities [to some of the other characters], but as the season progresses, you'll see that the newbies are their own entity.
Insider.com: Speaking of, how was it working with the returning actors as they slowly find their way back to McKinley?
Jacob: The way Ryan [Murphy, creator] brings all the returning characters back is so smart – and the way he keeps them around is too. You'll definitely be spending more time with the graduating class in the future. I think the fans are going to love it.

Insider.com: Last week it looked like Jake and Marley were going to start dating, but then -- out of nowhere -- it was revealed that Jake was actually already dating Kitty. Will we find out how that came to happen?
Jacob: Yea, you will definitely see why they're together because it did come out of left field for me too. People didn't kind of know why he was dating the head cheerleader, but you'll see what has brought them together for sure. And that triangle is only going to get more dramatic from here. Glee is notorious for having these crazy triangles all the time, so you're always thrown into new relationships. There's definitely some romantic drama coming.
Insider.com: Is there an artist or song you'd particularly like to cover on the show?
Jacob: I would love to sing some Frank Ocean – I think his music is really incredible, he's such an original talent, so I would love to do one of his songs. As long as I can steer clear of rapping, I'll be OK – I'll leave that up to Matt Morrison.
Glee airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.
