The Real Housewives of Atlanta is boasting the most-watched premiere in Bravo's history and the show's outspoken housewife NeNe Leakes now gives her take to The Insider on the underlying reason for Atlanta's popularity.

The Housewives franchise has blossomed after its Orange County installment saw success after premiering in 2006. Now with six total shows in the franchise, Leakes speculates the particular success of her show as being linked to race.

"In the...'Real Housewives' franchise, we are the only brown girls," she said candidly. "You can always turn on the TV and see those Beverly Hills girls, those Miami girls, those New Jersey girls, [and] New York girls and you still sort of...get the same flavor, but when you turn and see the 'Real Housewives of Atlanta,' you're getting a group of brown girls."

Expanding on the notion that race may play a factor in the show's popularity, Leakes put forth the idea that viewers may be intrigued by watching her and her fellow housewives perform the same activities as their Caucasian counterparts.

The reality star and now TV series actress on The New Normal added that while she and the Atlanta women are "super entertaining" and "fabulous," they experience the same things that an average person does. That reliability, she points out, is furthered by the lack of fakeness on the show.

"With us, we're not so plastic surgery," she said. "[On] these other franchises, everybody's so plastic...We're just regular girls. We're really keeping it real, and I'm always surprised when people say, 'Are you guys scripted?' We're so not scripted; we're just a disaster."
